I started at Broadway Butcher. If you haven’t been here yet, what are you waiting for?! It is a one stop shop for high quality cuts of beef, pork, chicken AND seafood. Nestled in the heart of Midtown, you can grab a bottle of bubbles or Pinot Noir at Gomer’s next door on your way home. Broadway Butcher was founded eight years ago and prides themselves on sourcing and selling what they would want to eat. Alongside the prime cuts of meat, you will also find house made sausages, local vegetables, specialty pasta, olive oils and an amazing charcuterie selection. Broadway Butcher works with sustainable farms and small batch producers for their meats and cheeses. The seafood is a rotating selection of what they can get fresh, and depends on what is in season; it might be oysters from Maine or wild caught cod from Iceland. While deciding on what to take home I caught up with the manager, Nate, who gave me personal recommendations for DIY surf and turf. Always pays to ask a pro. Hello, grilling season!

So while Kansas City may already be on the map for the turf portion, did you know we also have a dedicated fish market? I am excited to share another local option with deep roots in our community and a commitment to fresh seafood, regardless of how land locked we may be.

Meet Murdock’s Quality Seafood. Serving Kansas City for over 20 years, trust me when I say they know their fish. If you have your heart set on lobster, this is the place. They carry a wide selection from whole catfish to king crab legs, along with some other delicacies like rabbit and frog. You can also snag sides and seasonings, and the customer service cannot be beat.

Over the last year, I have really leaned in to making the mundane moments feel special. I recommend pairing your cooking skills with an amazing Spotify playlist (I love Cocktail Jazz, Feel Good Dinner or The Cook(in)!) and lighting some candles. Now that we are nearing spring you can even dine al fresco (too soon, KC?!) The possibilities and flavors are endless with these local shops. A custom surf and turf is perfect for spoiling yourself, a romantic date night or dinner with friends!
I cannot wait to see what you whip up – make sure to tag @mikcexplore if you visit either. You can follow Broadway Butcher on Instagram @broadwaybutchershop and find Murdock’s on Facebook.
